Flirty Friday

FaceTime

I saw this picture and instantly smiled. The happiness in their faces is so apparent. It is amazing how much the face can communicate in pictures. I started thinking about face shots and I went rummaging through my Tumblr archives for some images of I liked.

The Fabulous Shingai Shoniwa

Can we please have a moment of silence for Shingai Shoniwa. I am not really into the Noisettes but she is fabulous personified. Talk about owning your look. *whispers* she was Solange before Solange was Solange.

Love these images of the Mizani celebrity ambassador. She is gorgeous and so is that hair.

Speaking of Shingai, she was recently in Harare, Zimbabwe with the Noisettes for the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA). My friend Lo (www.lochnation.com), who is a radio personality-slash-blogger-slash-stay tuned because she is doing awesome things, interviewed Shingai & Dan of the Noisettes over at ZiFM Stereo. They talked about their feelings about their first HIFA performance and much more.

Memorial Day Lookbook

Summertime Fine!

Happy Memorial Day :) Cheers to an awesome Summer! I put together two mood boards that give me all the warm and fuzzy feelings of summer time.

Sunday

Lookbook: Easy Like Sunday Morning

Diamonds on my D*mn Chain.

HOW AMAZING are these neck pieces? I envy people who are good with accessories. For years, I have tried to wear more accessories... I buy necklaces and rings etc and after a week, but I just never wear them much. Anyway, I always discover pieces that reignite my desire to become an accessories fiend type of girl. If I owned these I would wear them all the time, everywhere, even when not appropriate, just because they are that fabulous.

The sisters behind "Me and Lex" have perfected the art of stacking jewelry. They pile on all types of gorgeous vintage and contemporary pieces and these are the results. Gaudy perfection.

Favela Cubana: Bottomless Brunch

After AIDS Walk, last weekend,  I headed downtown to Greenwich village with my friend to meet up with two other friends. We were originally going to have brunch at the Jane but the prospect of a 45 minute wait combined with non-stop rain, reminded me of a restaurant around that block that I went to last year.

Favela Cubana is a small Brazilian and Cuban restaurant. The decor features wooden tables and chairs and big drums as seats at the bar (nice touch). The space has a very down to earth, no frills feel to it. It is tight quarters so I would not recommend it for a date but it is great if you are feeling social, we had a great chat with an NYU professor who sat at the table next to us. Oh and Cameron Diaz came in and sat at the table right behind us.

THE FOOD: I had the Cuban eggs benedict (poached eggs + pulled pork) with homefries and a salad. Amazing. Everyone else had hangar steak and eggs, it was reportedly very good. Also had desert (chocolate cake with ice cream) but I did not like it, I think I was just too full at that point. We opted for the 1 hour unlimited brunch cocktails which is an additional $15.

Overall, I enjoyed the whole experience and it was all reasonably priced. I will go back!

Dries Van Noten: Floral + Plaid

My print obsession led me to revisit past collections to see just how designers have worked with prints. I found the Dries Van Noten collection from Spring 2013, this collection is an interesting mix of florals and plaid -- together, at the same time. It seems odd, but I'm loving so much of it. He took both types of prints to a different level and I love that.

Take a look at the rest of the collection over at Style.com

Upper West Side

Some pictures I took the other day because it was so beautiful outside and also because I got stuck in 2 hours of traffic trying to get from the city to the 'burbs. I love NYC when the weather is good and people always make fun of me for taking pictures as though I am a tourist *shrug*

Trendy Tuesday: Mary Katrantzou Spring 2013

Rihanna in Mary Katrantzou

Because I am print obsessed, it is only natural that I love Mary Katrantzou. She is based in London like my Peter Pilotto, there must be something in the water there. Whatever it is, I want some.

WE DID IT! AIDS WALK NY 2013

*Please excuse the poor quality pictures.

One of the best feelings is having an idea and then executing it. Following through is the new black :)

A few years ago, I decided I wanted to walk in New York's annual AIDS Walk, the only problem is that I was never in New York at the right time. This year, I was here so I decided it was going to happen. Then I thought, why do it alone? So, I recruited some friends and made a team. Then I decided even that was not enough, let me do some fundraising. A month and a half , a couple of emails to my team, weekly tweets & facebook statuses,  countless emails between with Rob at the AWNY office and 10km later, WE DID IT! Even in the pouring rain, it was great.

About 20 people were part of my team, unfortunately a few did not walk because of the rain but HATS OFF to those that did. From screaming and cheering "Sisonke" (our team name) to singing Justin Timberlake's "Mirror"to just having good conversation and laughs while navigating a crowd of 30,000 people [plus their umbrellas]....I can honestly say we had a great time.

This whole experience surpassed my expectations in many ways. I am grateful for all the support and thankful to everyone, especially Team Sisonke :)

Instagram Chronicles: Week Round-Up

1. Junk food on a sick day makes it all seem better. Shake Shack is the frontrunner for best burgers in New York City.

2. I love white pedicures/manicures. My cousin always makes fun of me asking why I have "whiteout" on my nails and if I'm too poor to buy real nail polish.

3. Getting things that are on your WISHLIST is awesome! May 14 finally arrived and I got the new novel by Chimamanda Adichie :)

4. I was so happy to be wearing my hair out because it thrives in the nice weather. It's always interesting (read: annoying) how people ALWAYS want to touch it.

A Good Day to be a Tweeter

It's no secret, I really like Twitter.

My FOUR year twitter anniversary was in January and I got a document with EVERY single thing I had tweeted up until that point. Very interesting, to say the least. So, one of my twitter rules is that I do not follow celebrities/brands as I stated in THIS POST but once in a while, I do tweet them. Lately, I've been learning more about social media marketing/management so I've been working on using Twitter differently and to its full potential as a tool in that regard.

Friday afternoon, I posted a link to THIS POST that I did on Fashion P.R. girls. OscarPRGirl, who was first on my list, tweeted me back.

Later,  I went to The Culture Project to watch my crush South African comedian, Trevor Noah. He was not feeling well but he rocked it, we were all in stitches! I love how he adapted his show and made it relatable for everyone, it wasn't so heavily South African. I tweeted while at the show and he tweeted me after the show. *dreamy sigh*

Thursday

Thoughts On Gatsby

I saw The Great Gatsby last night. The evening kicked off with some food and the appropriate refreshments (pomegranate martinis.) I read this book, like many other American students, at some point for a book report. I may or may not have used Spark Notes or  maybe it was a VERY long time ago because I only remembered very few things about it.

This is what I thought (no spoilers.)

1. This movie is a VISUAL delight. I had a lot of faith in Baz Lurhmann and he did not disappoint. I did not even watch it in 3D but I felt opulence and the drama oozing off the screen.

2. I know I said I disliked the tracks I had heard from the soundtrack (the Beyonce & Andre 3000 cover of Back to Black + Emeli Sande's cover of Crazy In Love) but oddly enough, I enjoyed them in the movie. They worked. I just don't want to hear them on their own.

3. Carey Mulligan was a vision as Daisy Buchanan. All the costumes gave me life.

4. "Love is one hell of a drug." -- that needs no explanation, if you know the story.

5.  Leo DiCaprio is just as beautiful now as he was when I first laid eyes on him in Titanic.

After watching the movie, I promptly bought Lana Del Ray's "Young and Beautiful" from iTunes. The scenes during which it played were so beautiful.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie. It was FAR too long but it lived up to the hype. Are you planning on seeing it?

Best Dressed: Solange & Rihanna

When it comes to looks I love, Solange and Rihanna are two people I can always count on. They are consistently fierce!

Solange at Cannes in Stephane Rolland Couture from the Fall 2012 collection. Solange can do no wrong when it comes style. This is gorgeous!

This look is everything. I love the colors and print. And the unbuttoned shirt works! It all looks so good that I can ignore the bad hair.

Refocused

A few weeks ago I took down everything on my vision board because I felt I needed to go back to the drawing board and figure some things out. I redid it this past weekend and added some fresh tulips to my desk. Reorganizing my workspace put some new energy in this room and I love how the little things can have that positive effect!
