Photo Diary: Blue Skies in Southern Africa

Over the past few months, I've become obsessed with the sky. Sometimes it is the most beautiful cloudless blue and other times it is lit up by some magnificent and terrifying lightning storms. I thought would share some of the pictures I have captured. Enjoy!

*All images captured with an iPhone 4S. Some edited with VSCO Cam.

Location: South Africa and Zimbabwe.

NYFW came and went and I have probably seen four collections maximum. I miss unlimited, reliable internet :( Anyway, came across this beautiful image. Tanzanian  model, Henrieth Paul, in Zac Posen.

MUSIC Break: South Africa

I have ABUSED these songs since I came to South Africa. I just cannot get enough of them. Every party, every gathering, in the car, at home -- these songs will always feature.

GHUBAR 05

I've loved Ghubar Magazine since its inception. I loved it so much that I interviewed the Founder and Editor, Sarah Diouf. It was quite funny because there was a bit of language barrier. But it turned out well. 5 years later, it is great to see just how much Ghubar has grown and I am sure Sarah is headed for big big things. She has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with, in the publishing world, and someone with excellent taste.

Recently, Ghubar released it's 5th Anniversary issue which featured some beautiful editorials. My favourite being the one shot in Dakar.

Another highlight for me was this quote that is posted in the message introducing the issue.

"Our souls are not hungry for fame, comfort, wealth, or power. Those rewards create almost as many problems as they solve. Our souls are hungry for meaning, for the sense that we have figured out how to live so that our lives matter so the world will be at least be a little bit different for our having passed through it.” - Harold Kushner

"Black History Month" Challenge

February is Black History Month in the US. As with anything on this planet, people are split on whether it is a good or bad thing to have a single month that is dedicated to the histories of black people. My stance has always been that I love Black History Month. Yes, it is only a month but it is better than nothing because Schools are NOT teaching black history, black parents are barely teaching their children black history and the media definitely isn't, so even if it is only for one month, I am very happy to see everyone make a concerted effort to share and teach black history. I do hope that one day we will get to a point where we do not need to do it, the same way we will get to a point where we don't need affirmative action, BEE in South Africa or indigenisation in Zimbabwe and any of the policies that aim to right past wrongs.

Anyway, back to Black History Month. I came across this challenge (The Black Love Valencia's Garden Challenge) and I thought it was pretty cool. I love to read some of the great thinkers, writers and fighters of our history because there are always gems in their works.

One of my favourite blogs at the moment is "Valencia's Garden." It is filled with reflections by a young woman named Valencia, a teacher in Baltimore. I always find her posts empowering and thoughtful; they bring an extra dose of positivity to my day so I wanted to share. Please check out the www.valenciasgarden.com and I hope you will join me in this challenge :)
